flared gills?

my betta fish occasionally flares his gill at me and i have no idea what he's doing. he pushes them foward and it almost looks like a lions mane around his head. although it only lasts for a couple of seconds can anyone tell me if this is good or bad and if so what should i do to fix it.

It's called flaring. All males do it as a sign of dominance. It's totally normal.
