new betta fish acting weird?

Hello,
I got a betta about a week ago as a gift. I have been feeding him one (or two) pellets a day twice a day and plan on changing his water about once every week. It is almost time to change his water again. When I got him, he was pretty calm. He would just swim around, hide out for a little, but now he is super jittery and swims up and down the left side of his bowl a lot and spins around. Is this normal?

Also, his "beard" looks weird and I'm not sure it that's how it's supposed to be.. it looks cut in half with little white chunks toward the end. Anyone have a good picture of a close up betta "beard"?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.....

In a 1gal unfiltered tank-I would increase the water changes to twice weekly....1-50% and 1-100% to maintain water quality......

I would go ahead and make a 50% water only change now and see if that will calm him down.....

You may or may not need a heater, however, it a good idea to have one on hand....you do need a thermometer to monitor the tank water temp (76-80F) and the temp of the replacement water for water changes- to try and keep it within a few degrees between new and old water...especially for the 100% water changes and be sure to acclimate to both chemistry and temp with the 100% changes by adding small amount of fresh dechlorinated tank water to the holding cup over 10-15 min to be safe and prevent pH shock.....

Post a pic of your Betta flaring so we can take a look at his beard....
