If you have a test kit, you should regularly test for ammonia and nitrite and perform water changes any time these get above 0ppm (even 0.25ppm is too high).

However, what you're doing now should be fine if you don't have any test kits. If you notice your betta's behaviour or appearance suddenly changes such as becoming lethargic or showing signs of fin deterioration, you might have to increase the frequency and volume of your water changes.

Gang valves work. I have one for my two sponge filters in my 20 gal. The turbulence upset my bettas, too.

I have a female with a not-so-muffled power filter flow >< but she seems ok. But it I stuck a different girl there she'd be pushed around by the flow lol. There are different valves you can try :)
