Adding a Heater?

I got my bettas earlier in the summer and the temp stayed at a constant 77. Fall is approaching and I've noticed the temps have started to decline in the five gallon tanks. As soon as I noticed this i ordered a 200w adjustable heater on ebay. It should arrive by the end of the month.

So my longwinded question is how should I get my bettas used to the temp change? I was planning on putting the heater in the tank and setting the temp at the temp that the water is at the time and increase it in intervals of 1 degree. I just don't know if i should do this every hour or once a day or even if this is the way to go. Give me your thoughts please :)
