I worried about Kenny!

So I have had Kenny for about a year. When I first got him he was a pretty white and blue. He now is a dull blue and the white is kinda cremeish looking. He doesnt look happy either. He lays at the bottom on the pebbles and when he is swimming around he droops his tail fins. He hardly eats when i feed him. I have tried changing his house and i clean his tank once a week. I dont know what to do. Help!

Well, I'm afraid thats the problem. Bettas need temperatures of 77-82F, which can only be acheived with a heater. Now, I understand that a heater wouldnt fit in a vase (and take up valuable space) so my best recommendation is to upgrade him. You can safely heat a 2.5g, and the maintenance would be less. In what you have now, you need to do 100% every other day. In a 2.5g, it's 1-50% and 1-100% every week. Just 100% once a week isnt enough for you right now. In clean, heated water he will perk right up. :)

Right now you should do a 100% change and try to move them to the warmest part of your house (without cooking them!). Just make sure they are not near any windows or drafts until you can upgrade. :)

I did a water change today. Where do you think the warmest part would be ? What do you use to clean the water? Can you use tap water that has sat out for a few days?

I know it can get pretty warm near my tv, lol. Maybe the kitchen? Just away from windows at least.

Personally, and many will recommend this, I use Prime to dechlorinate my water. Yes, you can in theory use water that has set out for a few days if your tap doesn't have chloramine or something like that. Not sure. It is always best to use a water conditioner like Prime.

Conditioners
Use a conditioner each time you change the water, you don't have to set it out 24hrs prior.
As far as warmest place in the house, you would know that. Some place away from outside doors, open windows. Good luck with your guys, any questions about the dividing of the tank just ask =)

It sounds as if it's cold water and ammonia build up with Kenny.. Poor guy, wish you the best.
