fin rot/melt

I came home today after a day out in St Paul/Minneapolis getting fishy supplies to see my poor ChouChou with a terrible case of rot/melt. He was fine this morning...not a sign of anything. Now his beautiful back fin is split and clumped...its horrible and I have never had this happen to any of my fish. He's in a 2.5 gallon all to himself with a heater..I was getting him a filter today as the other I had in there was pretty strong. I just changed the water on weds/Thursday and was going to change it again tonight 50%. The one thing that did happen was that my Mother was playing with my light switches when she was over and shut off the one that controls his heater. I am sure that the 3 days in between water changes didn't help either but the ammonia was withing normal limits when I did the change last. Right now I have him in a small critter keeper with salt (1 tsp to a gallon) I rinsed his tank with hot water and got the filter and heater working again. What else can I do for him...he looks horrible and he's never been the healthiest betta in the first place (thin and supper shy when I got him)
PS everyone else is doing fine

I'm so upset, I could just cry. He looks miserable. He did eat though. I'm worried that since it started so fast it will progress to his body.

So he has black edges to his fins along with them being clumpy?

Are the edges stuck to each other or is he just clamped?

the edges arent really black but they are stuck together, and his tail is split. He looked perfect this morning

Alright. well if it is truly melt. you'll want the aquarium salt at 1-2 tsp/gal. Give him a chance with 1 tsp/gal right now.

Have you added anything new to his tank or changed anything other than the water? And when you changed the water, it was from the same source?

yes, it was from the tap and sat over night with treatment for chlorine ect. the only thing new I put in the tank was a decoration...a little clay pot I got at the pet store but that was maybe monday or tuesday and I rinsed it well before adding it

What tail type was he before this? Plakat? He honestly looks like a double tail right now, but that might be the split.

I'd take the clay pot out of it's porous. It might be releasing something into the water.

For now keep his water extra clean and use the aquarium salt until the melting is gone or for a max of 10 days.
