Filter trouble

My filter is shooting out little pieces of cotton stuff from the back of the filter (It shouldn't even be able to get through the filter, they're really big pieces). What affect could these stringy things have on my betta?

If the Betta eats it, I imagine it could have the same effect as a human eating cotton balls - not good.

Did you rinse the filter before setting up and running it all?

No :X
Edit: Just rinsed it off, don't even care if it resets my cycle. My betta deserves the cleanest water. :)
