Question Can driftwood "go off"?

Hey everyone. In my 10 gal I had a piece of driftwood that was in there for about a month and a half, but a few days ago it started to form what looked like dust on its edges, I think it had been eroded by the water (worn away). I took it out when saw this, just because I didn't want the big ball of what looks like dust to be floating about in the tank, especially as Daz seems to eat anything that I put in the tank lol. Thanks for any tips!

Sometimes when this is happening, its the wood rotting. Make sure its real* driftwood.

Mine did this for a long time before it stopped, but I would take a (NEW!) toothbrush to it and rub the mulm off.
