Ocean Shell...Safe for Tank?

Hi all! My wonderful man took me on a date to the ocean this weekend. While walking the beach, we were able to find a nice size shell that was intact. I think it would be beautiful in a fish tank but would it be safe? Would I have to do anything to it to make is safe?

Thanks for your help!

I would give it a good hot water soak. Make sure you don't use any soap, soap residue can harm your fish. Maybe even try boiling it? I have shells in my tanks and they have never caused any issues, I just make sure they get cleaned off in really hot water before going in

Shells and corals can sometimes leech something into the water that can affect PH, I can't remember if it will raise or lower, but I think raise. One shell might be okay, but I'd try to find out a bit more before adding it.

In a large tank, it probably wouldn't hurt but I wouldn't put one in a betta tank. No matter how long you soak them they will still leech calcium carbonate, raising both the pH and the water hardness which might be okay for saltwater or brackish fish but not typically for tropical fish (betta!)
