Female Betta Ready???

I have a female betta named Butterfly, and I think she is ready to mate. I'm not exactly sure what are all the signs, but she has this white dot under her belly and she looks really swollen. Also when we put her tank next to our males (sorry he just passed away this morning, so I have to get a new one), her gills flare out and she flaps her fins really fast. DOes this mean she is ready to mate? I also have another question, if I choose not to let her mate, will this harm her in anyway, I just don't think I'm ready for that type of responsibility of more babies in my house? I'm new to this Betta thing.

It won't hurt her an any way if she doesn't mate. If you see verticle stripes on her sides, that is a sure sign she is ready.

Welcome to the forum.......

The female will be fine and she doesn't need to be spawned-especially since you are not ready.....

Females will always have unripe eggs and will either-drop and eat the eggs or not or reabsorb the eggs on a regular basis...this is normal...be aware that when they do drop and eat the eggs or reabsorb the eggs their poop may look different for a few days-it often will look whitish/creamy...no to be confused with internal parasites......

Love to see some pics and hear more about your Bettas......
