Dividing ten gallon help?

I have one of those basic ten gallon tanks with the black rim around the top.

I've tried the pre made dividers from petsmart and they're warped/won't stay straight. I can only find guides for making dividers using those binder things and i can't find those around here(walmart hasn't carried them in a couple years).

So i was thinking on cutting notches in the back rim on my ten gallon and sliding either mesh or glass with flow-holes into it.

Would this work, has anyone tried it?

Sounds like it would work if you had a good amount of substrate on the bottom to hold it as well. I would say go mesh....but I dont think it will stay very well this way, but a piece of thin plexi with lots of holes should be rigid enough to do the job well :)

my 10g tank is like that too i just cut the black rim with a knife enough to fit the divider in, make sure you don't get black particles into the tank if it has water in it already though x) i made the mistake of doing that then i had to vacuum all the black little pieces out. its a pain in the butt haha

Walmart carries these poster hanger/ holder things that look almost exactly like the sliders from the slide binders. The only thing is, is that the back edge isn't perfectly squared so adhering them to the walls of the aquarium might take some patients. But I'm sure they would work.
If you decide not to adhere them in the tank for guides, you could at least use them to add some rigidity to the mesh your planning on putting in there.
