Male or Female?

So I picked this little guy up from Petsmart. S/he was labeled as a Dragon Scale betta fish, but no gender was specified. Originally I was looking for a male, but this one caught my attention.

I know s/he is an opaque/pastel-colored betta. But that's about all I've been able to determine. I've tried checking to see if I can see the egg spot, but I haven't spotted one.

Help would be much appreciated! This is my first betta, so I'm quite inexperienced. >__<

His/her name is Finneus, by the way! Pictures are attached, and any/all suggestions are welcome!

(Sorry for the crappy photos. That's the best camera I've got.)

That's a male!!!! If there's no eggspot, then it's always male =D He has really unique coloring, i really like him!!!! My only suggestion would be that his tank is a little on the small side, but it should be fine for now =) Just make sure you do one 100% and one 50% water change a week and he should do fine! The ornament is a little large for his tank, you might want to go with something a bit smaller, bettas like free swimming space =)

The fins are so short, though, compared to pictures I've seen, so I wasn't sure. ^^ And thank you!

I did research and learned that the minimum size tank a betta can/should live in is about 1 gal. I make sure to do 100% water changes every other day or so to keep it nice and clean. :] I'll keep your suggestion about the ornament in mind; he seems to enjoy it, though, since he's got a knack for wedging himself in between things.

He's what's called a plakat male, which is a short finned type of betta =) Oh ok, from the pic it looked like the tank was 2 gallon!!! You're doing just the right amount of maintenance for a 1 gal =) It is a cool ornament, i like it!! just make sure he can't get wedged in it somehow, or get scratched on it!

Actually, very young male plakats can definitely have an "eggspot".. they use it to trick other males into thinking they are female (since they have short fins), but it does go away..

But on topic: Handsome boy you have there.. I love some of the lighter colored bettas.
