lava and sand

i wanted to get sand, lava rock, driftwood, and live plants for my tank but i heard lava rock and sand raise the ph and that is bad? is there something i cant do before i can get it to not cause a problem?

Depends on what kind of lava rock though, lava rocks are inert (doesn't leach salt to cause increase in pH). I know for a fact driftwood leaches and makes the water more basic (lower pH). Either way Bettas can stand a big range of pH so there should be no problem, unless you're using the tank for some sensitive aquatic animals like shrimps.

Yep, grab a pH test kit if you're worried about your pH that much.
