Anyone own them? Know of some reliable websites for information? Was thinking of getting one from a friend, but need to know what I am doing before I attempt.
I don't own them, I know a little about them, though. Biggest thing I can correct: some sources say 10 gallons as a minimum, I'd say it's really a 20 gallon long.
I was thinking 10g to start, since that's what comes with it. Then I could try and find a 20 long or make a tank for it. 20g L are very very hard to find here.
Oh believe me, I know about upgrading. No stranger to tropicals! I actually see a lot of sites suggesting 15-20g or larger. I have seen a few say 10g, and one say pair per 10 gal. I am not interested in a pair that's for sure.
I started out with a 5g, then 10g, then 29g and now I have a 50g for my tropical fish and hope to get my 75g in the future :)
Turns out, I am on the top of the list for babies, and if there are no breedings, I'll be taking one of the adult males instead. We picked black instead of albino.
I did mean friend... my friend Kate's mother breeds them. She offered me one before I got into fish. Today she offered me a 10g tank if I wanted one, I totally forgot about them! She was breeding them too but decided to hand it all over to her mother. So free Axolotl and a free tank to get me started. I've been doing lots of research, like temps and substrate and tank size. But with so much info out there, I'd like to know which to believe. I have read that adults don't swim or move much, and that babies are more active. And also that they like cool water and low/no light. My basement will be perfect for one.
Yes, very interesting on the temps. Most tropicals slow down in cold, and speed up in heat. These guys speed up in cold and slow down in heat. I really don't know how to keep the water that cool though, keeping the heat off in the basement should work I hope!
