Went to petco

for the first time , one in west orange , went in to look @ some tanks they had about 40-60 bettas crown tails, deltas, half moons. Mostly males very few females.

All are kept in small containers like this, with about what cant be more than half a cup to a cup of a water , with a small breathing hole on top

the water for about 90% of the tanks was pretty much clean as you can see

except for one or two which was horrible , didnt get a chance to take a pic of those

this is typical for Petco - these conditions are actually very good compared to other stores like Walmart and Petsmart.
My local petcos actually have better display setups though. Each cup gets its own little section and the fish can't see each other - which keeps their stress down.

^Agreed

I haven't seen bettas at any Walmarts near me for awhile but stores that still do sell them usually don't have great care. The fish section in walmarts don't have designated fish people watching them either.....just regular employees. At least at Petco and Petsmart there's at least one person considered the "manager" at the fish sections....but still....those stores are all still guilty of poor fish care depending on where you go.

At least the water is clean. I have never seen dirty Betta jars at my Petco/Petsmart but on many occasions the jars at Walmsrt are so dirty you have to get up close to see if there is even fish in them.

yup that is completly normal for petco to keep them in those cups
Mine also has a better sup up though, its kinda a shelf rack that has like 10-15 shelves that are all divided up just the right height and length for the cups, so each betta can't see his/her neighbor

Thats how my local petco is. They also do a real good job at changing the water in the cups.
