Digging then Died?

Hello all,

I've been using the forum here and there for tips on my Betta, though I haven't posted anything yet.

Came home today and noticed there wasn't any movement in the tank, then frantically searched around it thinking he jumped out... then on the bottom, top, int he plants, etc... turns out he had dug himself underneath the river pebbles, then got stuck? Has this happened to anyone else before? I searched on here and didn't see anything- honestly I didn't even know he'd be that strong to dig underneath a pebble.

Not sure if it was an accident or if something drove him to do it- he had a fresh tank and was well fed before i left him

Welcome to the forum, sorry for your loss. :(

Was there a very big gap in the pile of pebbles he got stuck under? Bettas are very curious and are known to stick their heads into any sort of gap they can find. They may then get stuck in small gaps and either drown or get seriously injured trying to escape.

I suppose that could be possible, but the pebble was on top of him... it may have fallen and trapped him? I know he was curious... used to get stuck between the bamboo and the glass when he slept

thanks!

Hi absintheuphoria,

Sorry about fishy :(

Good possiblity that when he was attempting to get into a small spot he nudged it, causing the stone to fall on him.

I would recommend a sand or smaller pebble substrate next time. As cherry said, these boys love to get into any spot they want to explore, and can hurt themselves doing it!

Aww poor little guy =(

Mine would do that.. used to have larger polished rocks in his tank, then the half rounded glass rocks.. now he is bare bottom for this reason. Sadly, they can drown.. he may of gotten too curious and either (like mentioned above) had some fall on him, or dug in and panicked and gotten stuck. I'm sorry for your loss.
