Sick or bored?

Okay first some background..

I have a betta that I had adopted last May. I was keeping him in a small one gallon bowl until I could save up the money/it got too cold to move him into a 10 gallon heated aquarium. Long story short, I had to move into temporary living situation and didn't get him moved fast enough and he got sick. He was very lethargic, had white fluffy patches on him, plus his tail was disintegrating, the tips of his fins looked bleached and he had some metallic patches around his gills and his face which was previously just black as far as I could tell. He was also flashing.

I bought a whole room heater to keep the temp at 76, and treated with Bettafix. Within a week he was very active (building bubble nest) and the white fluffy spots where gone. His energy and personality also returned to normal

He continues to act perfectly fine. He has tons of energy, a big appetite and continues to build bubble nests. The fluff has not returned. However the metallic patches around his gills and face are still there, his tail is continuing to deteriorate and I can't tell if the tips of his fins are getting better or worse..

The metallic color around his gills looks like the color on the rest of his body. It used to be all black so I'm wondering if that color change is just due to him getting more color due to better food and water conditions (during move he wasn't getting as much care as he should have sorry to say :( ) or if he's still sick. Also wonder if he could just be tail biting but worried about the color bleach out in addition to the deterioration.

I tried to take pictures, but I'm afraid the camera I have is less than great through glass.

Thoughts?

I've noticed my bettas change colors with age, and with food changes/water conditions. So that part may be normal... As for his fins, are they U shaped on the edges? are there any thinning parts?

Yeah there are holes in the middle of the fins, which I've never seen before and big cut outs in kinda u shaped I guess.. Also changing to a bleached out looking orange instead of the bright blue they used to be.

Those pictures look GREAT if ya ask me! :) Everything sounds and looks normal to me. One of my bettas actually had very similar color changes..... and she's perfectly healthy. Color changes are very normal, and your reasoning is very correct. Environment changes can definitely affect them :D Just post if anything else happens that concerns you :)

I do see some small tears and holes.... they could be in the process of repairing. I'd try a little AQ salt maybe? Just to help him heal up :)

Yeah I have two bettas who have fin rot, which the holes are caused by. clean water and conditioner works nice, and if you have stress coat it is apparently very good to use too

I agree, he looks okay. A lot of bettas have coloring on their gills like that. AQ salt at a 1/2 tsp per gallon for 5-7 days can help with his fins but honestly you might see that clear up with just clean water and heat. I'd go that way first. Good luck!

Ok thanks guys. I'll just keep an eye on him. He should move to the 10 gallon soon anyway. I'm trying to finalize getting the right airstone for a hydor I sponge filter and then he should be good to go.
