Question about fin rot!

Dol's a devious tail-biter, I've noticed. The other day (after not being able to do his regular water change due to a cold that knocked me out for like an entire day) I saw that a small section of his tail was missing and automatically assumed fin rot. However...I looked today and there were no black edges or anything like that.
My question is this: is black edging a guaranteed feature of fin rot?

Black or red edging is definitely a guarantee for fin rot. It turns those colors because the cells are dying and rotting, hence the name.

If a big chunk is suddenly missing, it's more than likely that he just bit it off given his previous history. I don't think missing a day here or there would let a rot set in.
