Hi there. Just checking, do you have a goldfish or a betta? What is the temperature of the water? Do you test your own water parameters? Why do you use epsom salt? If you are treating his fins, you should use Aquarium salt and not epsom salt. If possible at all, try to take a photo of your own fish to get a better diagnosis and help for the dark spots you mentioned. However, this is what I would do right now for fin treatment.

1) Use 1 gal of water (same temperature as his current water) and dissolve 1 tsp of AS
2) Add conditioner
3) Add Stress Coat or Stress Guard if available
4) Then add your fish in there
5) Daily 100% water change with steps above for 10 days
6) Observe for changes or improvements

I do not know why you add epsom salt. Epsom salt could be a cause, if you sometimes use it in the water for bettas. Bettas are strictly fresh water fish, and you should never be using epsom or AQ salt unless treating something (then never for longer than 10-14 days). Epsom is for internal problems such as swim bladder's disorder, and cleaning out the betta's digestive track. Try stopping the epsom :) they do not need it.

For bettas, ammonia burn is usually visible on or around the gills... usually black, and the betta sometimes will be breathing odd. Best bet for 2 gallons, clean every 2-3 days - which makes a big difference :)
If it is a goldfish, well, in something that is under 2 gallons you'd have to clean every day to avoid ammonia build up because goldies are notoriously messy fish.

Im pretty sure epsom salt is a laxative for bettas. So using it for his fins wont help at all :S

That might cause the black spots. Im not sure.

Oops, I had been using the Epsom salt thinking it was going to treat the ripped fins. I thought I had heard to use it and not use aq salt. OK I am changing the water everyday-every other day using aq salt. You said to keep it the same temp as his tank, but he has a heater. :/ how would I do that?
