i need help im new and have not attemted to breed my bettas yet i went to pet smart and they did not have a sponge filter but they did have this net that i could put around the filter would that work?

What type of filter do you have??
Sponge filters are the best because the fry wont be sucked in by the filter and the bubbles can be controlled where the current wont be too strong.
I get mine from Doctor Foster and Smith Aquatics online

The net might prevent the fry from being sucked in but the current still might suck them against the net and drown them. Sponge filters are very cheap online if you are old enough to buy them there - ebay and amazon and stuff. Is there a local fish store in your area? They will carry them.

i found out that other people say that they have put a sock on the filter
i have a internal filter i think thats what it is

The sock/pantyhose thing is mostly to lessen the current for adult fish who have problems with the current(like halfmoons who have longer tails).

If you can't buy one online, you can makeone from things you might already have or can buy at petsmart.

you need(i think) an air pump, some airline tubing, a plastic tube or pvc pipe(i'm going to me using a plastic tube my glowsticks came in because it has a 'cap' so i can keep the airhose in there without an airstone or sealent) and then the actual sponge......don't quote meon this though as it just what i can kinda remember, i can look for the guide to make one if you like.

Many people have just done filterless spawns with success though.

Depending on the size tank you use you might want to wait until your fry are free swimming to introduce the filter.
I had a male who wouldn't spawn because of the filter, guess he didn't think the tank was adequate. Once I removed the filter he got right to it.
