sorority = NOT easy to set up. HELP!

So....I posted about my church having bettas as raffle gifts for children and I ended up with a bunch of females because I could NOT leave them w/ these little kids and parents who had no clue. Well, apparently I too have no clue. I feel awful. I bought a 10gal. TONS of plants, caves, hiding spots. Introduced them all slowly. I had a suspicion one might be a male and removed him. There was quite a bit of "who is the boss" going on initially then it died down. Well, I came home today and one was torn to pieces. Completely torn up. I felt so badly. 2 were hiding in corners. 2 were swimming around but looked a bit stressed and one was completely stressed striped. I don't know what went on but it must have been bad.

I took out the very stressed one and gave her a tank of her own. I put a divider in and separated the other one that has been the most aggressive.

I am looking for any advice / help here. I don't want anymore to be torn up.

How many females do you have in the 10gal?

If you have over 5 girls, you should probably get a bigger set up. Sororities fail all the time.
If you don't already have tons of hidey caves and planta, get some. You'll need tons of plant coverage in the tank. I'm talkin' about TONS. If you look from the side of the tank inside, you shouldn't be able to see though the other side. The girls are probably stressed from having to see each other all of the time and can't get away from each other.
I wish you luck!

What Gnats said. Like this, but more so. This is the most lightly-planted stage of my sorority.

It is especially difficult with girls who aren't used to living together. Sometimes they will never take to it, so you may well be fated to have a bunch of smaller tanks.
Good job on rescuing them from your church, though. I'd have a word with the pastor!

Make sure they aren't plakats.
You said you have a ton of plants, are they medium to tall in size? Smaller ones won't cut it, they need mid to high level coverage.
Take them all out and rearrange the tank, then introduce them all together again and hope it helps.. will have to give it time for the stressed ones to calm down. Sororities can be very hard at times.

I have lots of plants. But maybe not enough. I will take them all out and reintroduce, change things around and see.

I am not sure if they are females or plakats at this point. I can't imagine that females tear each other to bits like they did this one fish.

Females can actually be just as aggressive as males. :/ ...if not more.
I occasionally come home to a torn girly, although not shredded like you described.

Would it be possible to get pictures of the girls and your tank?

We may be able to help more if we know what everything looks like, or at the very least, confirm you have girls.
