get a digital thermometer and several candles. Figure out how many it takes for the ambient heat to raise the temp of the tank. The added bonus is it acts as lights when power goes out too.

ahh the lessons you learn through poor life choices and poverty...

I have no power, and no towns around me have any. I have been staying up 24/7 feeding the fire trying to keep my fish warm. I lost one so far and expect to probably loose the other two. I only have so much firewood.

wrap the tank and use ambient heat from a candle placed near the tank. Heat water with candle or over fire place in baggie float in tank to warm water.

We have a portable generator bought by my tool junkie hubby. He uses it for electric tools on some jobs where there is no power. I know he paid less than 400 for it and we have used it to run a small heater last winter when we got hit by a blizzard and lost power for several days. The thing runs on a battery for about 12 hours. At that time we only used it to get the temp in the living room (rest of the house was shut off to keep in the heat) then we turned it off. OH yeah also to make coffee and tea. Talked last year of getting extra batteries but of course we haven't yet. I believe he bought it at Home Depot.
