Water changes in heated tanks...apologies if a dumb question

So I am preparing to finally move my fish into heated tanks...and I realized there is one little detail I'm not so sure about. All this time they have been at room temp, I have been letting the new water for the water changes sit out overnight so I know it will also be at room temp and there won't be any temperatures shock with the water change.

How does one do this with a heated tank? I don't/won't have an extra heater to use to heat up the new water - is it ok to use warm running water from the sink and stick the thermometer in there to make sure the temp is approximately the same? How do others do this?

Sorry if this is a really dumb or basic question. I did not do anywhere near enough research before getting these fish (lesson learned for sure!) and I keep coming up against issues that I don't know the answer for. Sooooooo glad to have found this forum!

Yeah, that's ok. As long as it's close. :)

That's exactly how I do it. Just make sure to acclimate each time. That way the temp doesn't have to be exact when you fill the tank. :)

My ultimate goal is to get a nicer heater for the tank, then move the cheap heater in the tank now into a 5 gallon bucket of conditioned water. But today I just poured boiling water in the bucket, then added cool tap water until it was about the same temperature as the tank. Conditioned it and changed the water.

I'd suggest measuring the bucket temp with the thermometer from the tank though, turns out the thermometer I used on the bucket was off from the tank thermometer by 2 degrees... I hope it wasn't too uncomfortable for the fish. :(
