Bettas and their caves.

So I got a floating water log for Vladimir (he goes to it every now and then, but not for extended periods of time; I'm still putting a little food at feeding time through the feeding hole at the top to encourage him that it's safe!). He also has a few plants (one being a baffler for the filter, the other helping keep the log in one place). As for Tristanislav, I got him a rather large decoration of basically multiple small caves in skulls.

Well, while Vlad is getting used to his log, I don't think I've seen Tristan go near his caves but MAYBE once. They're in a 10g tank (divided, of course) and I worry that maybe the caves are a bit too low for him (since bettas are surface breathers). Could this be the case, or is there any way to sort of give him the idea to use the caves?

It's possible that he uses it when you're not around. Bettas like to pay attention to what's outside of their tank when there's something moving around. The height of your tank really doesn't affect his getting down to use the cave. Most of my fish sleep on the bottom of the tank. He just probably like other in his tanks things better :D
