Aquarium light

So I went to PetCo to explain that my hood no longer fits due to the bottle baffler trick on the filter. The guy there, and he's been there the whole time I've had Vlad and Tristan, said that I could rig up an extension of the aquarium edges to safely set the light on.

So a couple of questions.

-Does anyone else have a problem with the bottle baffler and lights/hoods? Or maybe I did mine wrong...?

-If I use JUST a light (no plastic underneath it), is that going to an issue with electrical hazards with evaporation and stuff? Or am I just way too paranoid for my own (and my fishes') good?

Note: The light would only be used while I'm in the room and at night.
