Fin rot + not eating?

So this morning I just noticed that Kurt's back tail is a bit ragged on the end. It was not like this until yesterday or today. What causes fin rot & what should I do about it? I don't have access to AQ salt.
He's also been spitting out his food instead of swallowing it. Like, he'll take it into his mouth and a minute or so later he's spit it back out, put it in his mouth again, spit it back out, etc. Do you think the pellets are too big for him? or is he just not eating?

You could see if upping the water changes helps with the black edges, or it might be natural coloring if he's starting to color up.

Give him a little time with eating. He might be a little shocked from the temperature drop.

Anything in the tank that could be causing the damage-like-plastic plants, rough decorations, gravel or items that could pinch his fins-like large glass stones, area around the heater...etc.....and you are sure he is not biting....

Do the fin edges look crusty and discolored or curly...any other behavior changes like clamped fins, hiding, lethargic, glass surfing...etc......

During the 2 weeks you have had him...was he eating okay....

Do you use dechlorinator? I seen that you did not list that....or are you on well water...if not, what is your source water....

Right now-I would increase the water changes to 50% daily with 100% weekly for 7 days-then 2-50% and 1-100% for another week-then back to the regular schedule twice weekly of 1-50% and 1-100%...eval the tank for items that could be a cause and hope its not biting...lol.....

You may need to get another food item to offer along with the current food...the more varied the better.....

Post a pic if you can this will help us and if he has any changes or gets worse he may need a treatment....

Keep us posted....
