Is this tank shape ok for a betta?

What do you think about a tank that is 20 inches wide, 6 inches deep and 8 inches tall? If my math is tight, it would be just over 4 gallons.

Could a betta be happy in it?

What type of filter would you use?

I think you're talking about the bookshelf aquariums?
I would place whatever filter in the middle... I like sponge filters the best.
Teh size is good for a betta, a large surface area is preferrable over depth.

Sounds like a pretty good setup. I prefer the shallower/longer tanks. All of my Bettas spend their time at the top or the bottom of their tanks, everything in the middle is just exercise LOL.

It sounds good :) I too like sponge filters, but anything rated for 4 gallons or more will works.
