Filter Cartridge

The 2.5 minibow I have has this specific filter cartridge, but I think 3 cartridges really aren't worth the $9. Would it be the same thing if I got these foam filter bag things and a whole box of carbon and made the filter cartridge myself?

It depends on how frequently you're going to change the cartilige, but personally i would say that you should just make them yourself... How many of the foam bags are included in a set?

Even better I would get rid of the filter itself, the current may be too strong for bettas, and make a homemade sponge filter yourself, which is even cheaper.

I agree, the filter for the MiniBow is very strong.
As far as the cartridge itself, you can just slit open the current cartridge dump the old carbon, rinse the cartridge and fill with activated carbon.
As long as the water flows normally, you can do with whatever works.

Thanks Dead Sunlight and vilmarisv! I've noticed that after a few weeks the water doesn't flow through the cartridge, even after I've rinsed it out. I'm thinking that I'll probably still have to change the cartridge, but it'll be A LOT cheaper this way. How would you close the bag?

At that point its best just to replace...
And duct tape will suffice, as long as it isn't in contact with the water.

You dont have to close the bag, just make the small slit on the oposite side on the water outake. This is how i used to do it and it worked fine.
I wouldn't use tape, if you want to close it you could make one or two stiches with thread and a needle to close it.
