My two boys currently live in a divided 2.5 gallon tank, a product of my ignorance when I bought them. They have been that way for awhile now, but it pains me to see them making such a little space work! So with Christmas right around the corner and some money saved up, I think the time has come to start planning my upgrade! I'm still new to this, so any polite advice and help is appreciated!
My plan is to get a 10 gallon OR a 20 long. I can't firmly say one or the other, as I haven't seen 20 longs at any of my local pet stores. Also, I plan on asking for the tank and hood for Christmas, so whatever I possibly get will have to make do. I would like to divide the tank four ways, giving me room to put one of my current boys in, as well as two new babies. My friend is going to house her betta there as well, as her parents are newly divorced and she can't care for him as she used to because she's switching houses every week. Is dividing a 10 gallon four ways still ok? I figured it would be fine since that still gives each fish roughly 2 gallons apiece.
I would also like to attempt my first planted tank! This makes me extremely nervous...and excited! I have a million questions. The first of which being, which sorts of plants should I purchase? I know my local Petco sells plants (not the kinds in the tubes, but plants that are grown in tanks to be sold) so whatever is available there would probably be easiest for me to get. Another question I have is what substrate should I use? I'm guessing this depends on what type of plants I get, but would regular gravel work fine for most plants? Soil based tanks sound incredibly messy! As for lighting, what types of bulbs best support plant life?
Last question has to do with filters and heaters. Any suggestions as to which brands work best? Purchasing filters and heaters without hearing advice from this community first scares me!
I've probably forgotten some questions, so I'm sure there will be more to come! (:
