The term "Pet Store" Bettas is reffering to some people and forums continuing to put down or not recommend breeding pet store bettas because of poor quality genes and not knowing how old they are, hence breeding a Betta that is older than a year which is supposed to be a bad thing. I think my scores in the IBC shows prove that pet store Bettas can be bred into show quality Bettas. I wouldn't recommend someone to just go out and do just that. It takes a lot more than just putting a male and female together and thinking you are going to show the offspring. It may take several generations of selective breeding to attain anything close to show quality. That's something I wanted to do and was several years in the making.
