How long have you had your tank going? Has it been the 8-10 months that you've had him? If so, then I wouldn't worry too much about the cycle now- it has pretty much cycled on it's own. Just keep an eye on the chemistry; check it before you do your weekly water changes, if there is any ammonia/nitrate then you can up the % you do weekly by either doing a little larger of a water change at the end of the week (50% or so), or do a mid week small one such as 10-20% along with a 30-50% end of the week change.
What type of filter are you using? If it is sponge then every couple of months when you do a water change, take it out and swish/squeeze it in some of the tank water you are removing. Only change out sponge filters if they are falling apart.. and when you do, prior to removing it, put in the new sponge along with the old one in the filter to allow the new one to build up the bacteria for a couple of weeks.
If it's the carbon, then change that out monthly- you can add in (if possible) the new one with the old one for a week or so, but usually there is enough bacteria in the substrate (if it's gravel or sand) that should keep it going.

This all depends on how long your 10 gal has been up and running with your boys in it. A lot of people just add in the fish and test it a few times a week to daily to make sure there are no spikes in the ammonia, but that is if it is brand new..

Sorry about the late reply myates. Yes my tank is pretty new it been running for about two months. I was just going to let it cycle on its own and the ammonia test kit I have is the api kit. I think it tests for total ammonia products instead of free ammonia which gives me messed up readings but I have been keeping a close eye on it. the filter in the tank is a tetra whisper 5 to 15 I believe I know it a tetra whisper though.
