Bettas do this, some more than others, so it's pretty normal. What temperature is "room temperature"? He may be cold. When they are cold they don't move much. They also "play dead" when they're scared. Do you have anything for him to hide in, like a silk or real plant, or maybe a cave?

Also, moving the jar around will cause him stress, which will in turn lower his immune system. It's like someone picking up your house--you'd think there was an earthquake or something going on. :)

This is not supposed to be funny, but RoyalBlueDarling used the earthquake analogy and there you went that the jar fell off the shelf!

Ok. A few housekeeping issues here....

1) Water - just use tap water, but add water conditioner like SeaChem Prime to remove the chemicals. It's cheaper and easier and has minerals the fish needs. (unless something is very very wrong with your water, which mean you need to get your water tested if you want to be sure)

2) Water change frequency - for a 1 gal, try to change the water 100% every 2 days or so. That's the problem with having a smaller tank. So you have to come up with a way that will allow you to give your betta clean water with the least amount of stress while you do this.

3) Temperature - you need to buy a thermometer that you can put inside the tank so that you know your betta is not suffering from cold.

4) Checking on your fish - if your betta is upright and floats in the middle of water, it's alive. If your betta sits at the bottom, may be slightly tilted, it's alive. Like all fish, if it is dead or about to, it will likely be belly up, floating on top or sunk to bottom, clamped fins, pale, and no movement But you will usually see some signs and symptoms of whatever the illness is, before it gets to this point. So relax and enjoy

Good luck!
