Betta fish are lazy and don’t do much.
You should feed your betta as much as he can eat in 3 minutes.
Live and frozen fish foods are too rich for daily feeding.
I think they are just pointing out common mistakes and they know that is wrong (despite being printed in just about every fish food container on the planet.
I can add to the list.
Bettas don't require any additional heat.
They make good first pets for children.
Males and females can be kept together.
Obviously the above are wrong, but are very common mistakes.
-bettas can live with goldfish
-bettas live in puddles so they can live in the cups they are bought in
-bettas only eat once a week or eat roots from plants so you don't have to feed them
-bettas are good party favors
-putting a boy and girl in the same tank will make them bread
-making a betta flare will tear their fins
-bettas in large tanks will tail bite
there's more but that's all i can think of right now

If someone gave me a betta for free at the end of a party with free cake, I would love that person forever.
Any how, more myths/misinformation.
-2 females make a sorority
-Betta kits are great for bettas
-the labrynth organ is secondary and gills primary for breathing
-Fish can't drown
-Bettas always fear large tanks
-bettas like dirty water, so you only need to clean the tank once a month
-an empty goldfish bowl is all they need to be happy
-they don't jump
-freeze dried is all you have to feed them
-freeze dried bloodworms is an every day food
-Betta are clean fish and only need monthly water changes
-You can keep males together as long as there is atleast 3 females
These are three things the last at Petsmart told me the other day:-?
"betta fish are from Thailand... Which is pretty close to China. So, since koi come from China, Betta fish have the same needs/ temperature."
my rebuttal: "you're kidding, right? Thailand is by the sea AND CLOSER TO THE EQUATOR!!! >/"
lol.
OH!!!
"tropical means salt water."
if that were true tropical punch would be disgusting..
-They thrive in tiny 'conventional' bowls
-They can live with just ordinary tap water (not dechlorinated)
-They don't live for very long, so it is expected for them to last only a few months
-They only need monthly/partial water changes.
Sadly I was told this by another Betta owner. Obviously I never followed them.
- You do not need a 2.5g + tank for them since they are use to small environments.
- You do not need to use water treatment for Betta's
- Doing a full water change will remove important bacteria.
In tanks, especially with filters, there is beneficial bacteria that is needed and you don't really want to be doing 100%s when you have an established tank, or a filtered tank. You can, just not very often.. but there is good bacteria in all tanks, even 1 gal unfiltered.
As far as the tiny puddles one goes.. it is a misconception as they are found in tiny puddles (as well as massive rice patties). There have been many stories and people finding them in holes that were created by a cow's hoof that filled in with water, and I remember one where it said it even had a bubble nest going. So technically, it's true they are found in small puddles (the rice patties are drained), and in big expanses of shallow water. Also, they don't "need" 2.5g, as they are perfectly happy and healthy in 1 gals.. it's the owners who make the smaller tanks dangerous, not the size of the tank itself.

read this in a book...i'm paraphrasing. the author stated that reds and blues were the most preferred color types, much preferred over the more 'dull' cambodians, etc. Funny, Dol's color scheme (certainly neither red nor blue) is part of why I chose him.
I think the bottom line is that it doesn't matter what people say 'everybody else' likes in terms of choosing bettas. pick those that steal your heart
wow, i wonder what he was basing his rather ignorant statement on? There was nothing dull about Tobey! I've never seen any betta that I'd call 'dull' except they all 'look' dull and faded when they are cold, in those lps cups. the reds and blues probably keep their color better in that situation, and thats how most people see them in pet stores. Hey, did i answer my own question? lolzzz
You know what really irks me is seeing big fighter type Plakats being sold/advertised as "Peaceful Bettas". There's nothing peaceful about a PK when a new owner decides to put them together . . . . :|
lol PK are peaceful??? My half giant PK was such a meaner!! All the other girls are VT, and she was PK and she was the ruler... I'd never want to have two of her together x.x And she wasn't even a fighter...
I've had a cambodian VT... such a pretty fellow once he colored up properly under good care. plain colored cambodians my foot... lol
