Dog people! What is this puppy?

Well long story short we're fostering a little puppy right now. A friend was looking for a home for this little guy. She got him from another friend who's female had a litter. She didn't really want him she just took him to do her friend a favor. And now she passed the little guy over to us, who are glad to him here. For now we're fostering him but who knows we might just keep him!
He's a cute little guy really playful and smart too. We named him Zepellin and with just a little "training" session I had with him, he almost learned his sit. Tomorrow we'll go out and buy him a collar and some toys.
Our question is what breed is he though? My friend claims he is a purebred but I honestly don't know. If he's mixed, what breeds do you guys see?

Doesn't really look like a purebred to me. It's hard to give any breed suggestions to a puppy that small without knowing what his parents look like.

Yes, probably not purebred... Maybe a little pit bull...

I'd say a border collie mix. Hard to say without something to judge it's size.

The nose is pointy, I wouldn't say any pitbull in this dog :) Not purebred though.

It's face reminds me of this one, this is a jack/border collie mix.

Zepelin's muzzle is rounder than the one in the other pic.

His ears are shorter, I'd say maybe a pitbull mix, nose is a little long for a pitbull.

As a Pitbull owner that's researched and studied them for 10 years, I still can't see pitbull. The coat is wrong type and long, no broad head or deep chest or knobby knees. Eye are not almond shaped. BUT there's been weirder things to happen. Basically, it's not purebred. Could you see what the mother is??

Fishman, it's not a 100% copy but it's a border mix lol I was just saying it's face is similar and the nose is in the same position on the muzzle :)

He looks like a short-haired version of my dog Lady when she was that age. She's a border collie and husky mix.
