I've used both. One tank is all plastic plants, but another tank is fully planted. If you've never kept live plants before, I would suggest you start with some plastic plants and maybe an Amazon Sword or an Anubias. As you get more comfortable with plants, you can take out the plastic ones and replace them with live ones.

A lot of us around here are big fans of real plants. But if you decide to go the fake route, get silk plants, they are less likely to scratch up your betta.

You can buy live Amazon Swords and Anubias at Petsmart and at some Petcos. Also most tropical fish stores. Amazon Swords, you can just toss in. When you get one, take scissors and trim off the roots so there is about a half inch left on the plant. Then just bury the roots in the gravel/sand. Make sure the gravel is pretty deep and covers all the roots. For Anubias, you want to make sure you don't bury something called the rhizome. If you do, it rots. Same with Java Fern. Both have rhizomes and burying it in the gravel/sand will kill the plant. I know, I learned that the hard way.
