please help, betta attacked while out of town?

Hello all! this is my first time posting. I've had a male betta, with 3 females, a few oto cats, and 3 mollies living together pretty well for the past month. I gave 2 of my mollies away and currently just had one until i could find a home for that one too. I went out of town for one night and came home to find my male betta's fins all torn up clearly from it being bitten. My guess is that the molly is the culprit, am i correct in thinking this? Also, will his fin grow back? He's swimming around fine but I don't know if i should remove him or what. I've already placed the molly by itself.

Any advice would be great! I'd really hate to lose my betta! thanks!

Well
Males and females should not be kept together, they do not do so in the wild (solo guys) and to do so otherwise often causes problems, some members have had sucess with it, but it is not something reccomended by betta owners.
Females CAN be kept together in established sororities, though it is hard to do and does not always work, it requires a heavily planted tank min. of 10 gallons.... and there should be at least 5-6 females to help spread aggression.
More than likely your one of your females attacked the male, he should be removed immediatly to a seperate tank and each female should be given her own tank.

Please answer all of these questions so we can further help you:

Housing
What size is your tank?
What temperature is your tank?
Does your tank have a filter?
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?
Is your tank heated?
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?
How often do you feed your betta fish?

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change?
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
How old is your fish (approximately)?

My boyfriend has another 10 gallon tank set up with a male betta and female bettas and they've been living together happily for close to 6 months now. I've seen the molly chase the male betta around before but the female bettas always seem to keep to themselves. But nonetheless I have moved the females to temporary housing (a 5 gallon tank)

Housing
What size is your tank? 10 gallon
What temperature is your tank? 78
Does your tank have a filter? yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? air bubbles. used rarely.
Is your tank heated? yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? 3 female bettas, oto cats, molly

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? betta pellets, freeze dried blood worms 1-2 twice a week
How often do you feed your betta fish? once a day skipping one day a week

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? about 20% every other week
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 20%
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? aqua safe plus water conditioner/ dechlorinator

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:

How has your betta fish's behavior changed? he seems the same
When did you start noticing the symptoms? yesterday

My suggestion, take the male out, they should not be housed with females for any reason, save breeding, and then only for a short period of time. They may have been peaceful until now, but chances are it is only a matter of time before they attack each other.

For now to help the male get better a QT tank of some sort will be ideal. In anything under .5 gal you want to do daily water changes. With any luck this will prevent rot and infection. A nice protein rich diet will also help with fin regrowth.

Is it just one oto and one molly? It's more than likely your tank is overstocked or very close to being over stocked even if it is just one of each.

I would separate the male and females as well, pick up a few more females and rehome the other fish (oto and molly). Not being mean or looking to sound rude, but it's a horrible set up :(
