Getting Ready...

Ok, so I am planning to keep my first ever Betta and have been reading the info on this forum:

Thus far, I have purchased:

5 gallon Hex 5 Marineland Tank

Gravel

Silk Plants

Food Pellets

Heater

Net

Other than the fish himself/herself - what else should I have on hand before adoption day (LOL)?

Thanks! NSNS

It seems like you're pretty much good to go! Does your tank come with a filter? If so you might want to get anaquarium sponge to baffle it also pick up a gravel siphon for partial water changes. You might also want to get water conditioner if you dont already have some...My personal favorites are stress coat and Prime.
If you want to be real prepared you could even get some aquarium salt just incase you need it later..
I look forward to pictures of your new betta!

Good that you're doing your research! Where are you going to get your first betta?

oh I forgot - I also got a thermometer!

WHere should I purchase the other items - salt and conditioner, etc.?

Also, where is the best place to purchase my Betta?

Type? Gender?

Looking for all recommendations... male or female?

I love blue fish :)

Tks

where did you get the other supplies? You should be able to get your water conditioner from the same place. I am not sure where youre from but I got a few of my guys & girls from Petco and Petsmart, where you can also purchase supplies. Type and gender is up to you. Each fish has their own personality - maybe you'll find one that catches your eye and you fall in love with!

Walmart, or other pet stores such as PetCo/Petsmart, and LFS should carry the salt and conditioner (don't use salt unless needed).

As far as the fish itself- most males will have the longer fins, but there are plakats which both sexes have short fins.
Both males and females are very personable, and have great personalities and are individual in them. The males may tend to be more colorful, but the girls are so cute too lol. So basically, it's whichever one you fall for!
If you go to PetCo, don't get the "baby bettas" they are selling, as unless you are experienced, it's not wise- they require a little extra care (grr on them for selling them so young).
Also, if you can, if you get a male, a cave of sorts would be loved by him- most males love to sleep and lay in caves.. I know mine does, I took them out once to change out the scenery and they didn't like it one bit lol.

A hint: Keep the cup they come in- they come in handy when you do large water changes or have to QT them for being ill.

As mentioned before, want to see pics when you get it all set up!

Betta's are readily available at petsmart / petco - but personally, I like smaller ( specialty ) fish stores where they sell fancy ( as in... various tail type ) betta's that are usually healthier and look better than the ones sold at petco / petsmart.

I'm not sure where you live, but you could look up local fish store by going on yelp. Make sure you read the store reviews, too. Call them in advance to see if they have betta's in stock.

I like males... but it's really up to you. :)

Sounds good. Only thing I can think of to add is maybe an ornament that allows for resting. It may not be necessary, but I feel better knowing my guy has a comfortable hiding spot and it serves as a "rest stop."
