New "Sorority" betta male....

Hey all.

So, I've got a new betta from my roommate, who was given the betta from her big. I personally do not know WHY she kept the poor little crowntail, especially since she hates animals.

Anyways, I just recieved it, and he was living in FILTHY water. It was pink tinted from his food. I put him in one for my extra tanks, with nice clean water, and a little of the bacteria from the previous water. I was going to change it this weekend when I was going to go down to my parents. However, I've noticed that he has some white fluffy stuff on the edges of his fins. I'll try to get some pictures later.

How has your betta fish's behavior changed? not sure, just got him, he's still really active though

Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? no, not sure what it is
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not sure
How old is your fish (approximately)? im guessing 1-2 years.... even though hes tiny compared to my halfmoon

Might be a slight case of fungus.
He's very pretty and very lucky to be in your hands now.

saw a picture like this the other day and they called it fin rot, but even if it's fungus the conservative treatment is the same. 1tsp per gallon (pre-disolved) aquarium salt and 100% daily changes. Salt can hurt plants!

I have tetra fungus guard tabs... will that work against fungus? I dont think its fin rot since its white and fluffy.....

thanks :) hes really cute but really tiny compared to my other 2 bettas :(

it looks like the fuzz my boy Cup used to get when he'd rip his fins and i'd not catch it. keep his water clean and dose him with Aquarium salt like suggested.

Did he end up getting even bluer still? He looks really pale and stressed in the pics.

There are two forms of fin rot- bacterial and fungal- bacteria being the black/red you tend to think of when you see "fin rot", and fungal being what you are seeing. As well as Columnaris can begin as fungus on the fins-
The fungal form of fin rot will eat away the fins in a more even and uniformed form, but it will eat the fins away just the same until it hit the body and attacks it.. since he is a CT, you won't really see the uniformity of it.

The AQ salt won't do anything for the fungus, but your fungal guard tabs should work. Daily 100% water changes along with the tabs and that should be fine to stop it. If not then Fungus Eliminator by Jungle, API Fungus Cure would do.
