i got my fish at college and i've had him here ever since but now i need to go home for the holidays and i figure i cant leave him here for a month on his own. so i need to figure out how to safely (and hopefully as stress free as possible) get him four hours south. any ideas? this'll be by car by the way.

When I bought six bettas at a Betta Show, I drove 4 hours with them in little bags, and they made it just fine. I was very careful to make sure they stayed warm.
I put the bags in a box surrounded by lots of newspaper so they wouldn't see each other and keep them from moving around as I drove.
