Exclamation Cycling your tank

Hey guys. I'm new to keeping a betta and i was wondering what it means to cycle a tank. Also i have a 50L tank and it seems to be getting a bit cloudy. I was wondering if cycling the tank has anything to do with it (if it helps with clear water).

In my tank I have a betta, 2 albino catfish and 6 runny nose tetras. I know that this is a betta site but i was wondering if anyone knows what this problem is; when i put the algae wafers in the tank (for the catfish) and my catfish does not eat it, long hairs start to grow on the food (maybe bacteria) I was just wondering if this has to do with the water and how i can fix it.

what kind of catfish? i think only a couple of catfish species eat algae.

There's a nice breakdown on cycling a tank in the habitat forum.
