Dealings with bettas as gifts.

I don't remember if I said something about this before, but I am saving to get my cousin a betta for Christmas. I have ninety dollars in cash and gift cards (to PetSmart) and I was debating what to get first with this money. At my LPS there is a five gallon tank kit on sale for forty dollars, and that's exactly the size I wanted to get so I'm going to buy that as soon as I can before the sale ends. What should I get with the remaining fifty dollars? (I've decided to let him choose the betta himself after we have the tank all set up.)

Forgive any typos...I'm using the tiny touchscreen keyboard on my Nook. X.X Also, the title shouldn't be what itis...I was originally gonna ask about the betta itself but I came to my own conclusion about it.

if the kit doesn't come with a heater, get one of those. and plants, gravel, food.... :U that's pretty much all you'll need, aside from the betta him/herself.

Okay, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything crucial. I actually have a list but I felt like I was forgetting something. X3

don't forget dechlor/conditioner, some kits dont include it and youll need more than the ones some include. I always get basic meds as well...just in case...maybe a leaf hammock? I made mine out of IAL and a suction cup with clip.

Not sure where you are located...
but try Walmart first... I got a ten gallon kit for $30... five gallons are cheaper but Im not sure how much

You will also need though:
gravel/sand
plants (live/fake)
heater!
water conditioner/stress coat
pellets
*frozen food (if you wanna go all out!)
leaf hammock or a betta log (or both!)
Aquarium salt
Epsom salt
any other medication you feel needed... dunno if your planning to help out with care

I'd also make up a little care sheet and put it in the kit, maybe with a link to this site and a note about cycling and the extra cleaning necessary during that time. :)

I wish somebody would buy me more bettas as a gift! :p

The 5's have a filter (thats a bit too strong imo for bettas, needs a baffle) and has a good hood for about $20 in the states.

I always switch out the set filter for a sponge-bog filter run by air pump...less current and keeps bubble nests intact! Essentially i just use the tank and hood. Although my walmart we have no petco or petsmart)does not sell them separately so I buy the kit if needed.

- Tank

- Hood and spare light

- box filter and air pump

- dechlor and so on

- decent betta food or best available pellets

- heater

- Thermometer if not included in set

- some silk plants or real plants

- sand for substrate (silica 2/pool filter sand)

-IAL
