Hehe, mine was a pretty slow leak. The sealant had gotten old on one side and had pulled away from the glass a little; it was slowly dripping into the black plastic portion around the bottom of the tank. When you fill up a fish tank the first time there's a lot of water to go around, so I didn't notice it (sigh). Overnight would be perfect.

Sounds like you're really doing your research, so I can't wait to hear about how everything turns out!

Thanks. I didn't really know anything about common/uncommon colors, but he was the healthiest looking and most "responsive" of the fish there.

I got the 10 gallon tank and a pretty wrought iron stand out of my parent's attic along with:
* a dated hood (do they even make the bulbs for that anymore?)
* a net
* the "complete idiot's guide to freshwater aquariums"
* and something like $75 in expired water treatments and fish medicine

I wasn't kidding that my parents tried very hard to save the fish that they inadvertently killed
