I have a 2.5 tank as well. I do a 100% water change each week. I take him out of the tank and put him into the container that he was bought in. Once I change the water turn on the heater and put in the water conditioner, I put the whole cup(with the fish in it) into and let it float in there for about an hour so the water temperature can equalize without causing too much stress and lowering the chances of shock. Once I'm ready to put him into the fresh tank, I pour out as much of the old water as possible then gently pour him into the fresh tank. the whole process takes about an hour and a half. I hope this helps =)

Just a tip: keep your filter in a bucket of the water you just removed from the tank to keep it wet and dirty. This will encourage good bacteria not to die off in the time the filter is out of the tank.
I'd say that a 50% change one week and a 100% change the second week would be enough for a filtered 2.5, but I'm no expert in smaller tanks.

Hi, I have the same size tank and I was hoping to do one 50% change one week and a 100% change the next, and so on. I was wondering how to do the 50% change?

You would need a gravel vacuum. its usually about 15 bucks at petco.

On a 2.5gal filtered-I would recommend twice weekly 50% water changes...1-50% water only and 1-50% to include the substrate by vacuum or stir and dip..
Filter media needs a swish/rinse in old tank water a couple of times a month to maintain good water flow
Dose the dechlorinater for the full volume of the tank and try to keep the water temp between new and old water within a few degrees of each other...

Love to see some pic...
