Today I saved a male betta from Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart keeps these little guys in the most deplorable conditions I've ever seen. If you walk down the fish aisle, depending on your store, you'll see the bettas in tiny compact containers with barley any water, stacked up on each other. Most of the fish are dead and the ones who aren't are dying, floating in their own filth.
I Immediately was overcome with sadness and I just knew I had to rescue one. I did eenie meanie minie moe and I ended up with...
Mickey
Side note: I can see that he's happier. He swims around a lot, exploring his big new tank (2 Gallons, Filtered, Air Pump, Temp 74ºF). I find that he watches me and comes up to the tank when I am close.
And he looks a lot healthier than when I first picked him up at the store. However, I am still concerned that he is sick, his color is fairly dull and he looks a bit sickly. I know that he's never going to be as "beautiful" as the "designer" Bettas that you can pay more money for/have shipped to you and I'm fine with that, I just want him to be healthy.
What do you guys think, is Mickey a healthy Betta? Is there any illnesses visible in the picture?
EDIT: Also, is there anyway to tell how old he is?
