When they feel the environment is suitable for a nest and when they sense the hormones put off by the female signaling her readiness to breed.

I am not sure what age my bettas are though i am assuming my female is older than my male based on her slightly larger size......
I have heard that the current may disrupt the male from creating a nest....is this true?

Tell us more about your spawning method you plan to use-tank size etc.. what you have on hand, what you need to get...etc........and feeding plans for pre-conditioning of the breeders and care for the fry....and your goals..... this will give us a better idea on how best to help you...lots of different ways to spawn and rear fry....

ok.
Tank is 60 gallons.
Lots of decorations and live plants.

Actualy, my female died this morning......:(

But i'm still willing to learn.
She had a swollen belly and her ovaculum was protruding quite a bit.
Did this mean she was ready to breed?
Whenn i examined her after her death, she looked fairly healthy...i'm not sure what kiled her. Everything was fine.........

The male may have killed her if they were in the same tank.

The swollen belly could have been many things, but likely she was egg bound. this happens from time to time where the eggs get stuck. I've never personally had this issue but I've read about it.

Take this as a chance to continue researching, gathering what you need, and then picking the perfect female to breed. Sorry for your loss.
