What kind of food? A lot of bettas won't eat "tropical flake" food. They are carnivores and need a meat based food; that means salmon, krill, shrimp, etc. They are also insectivores and generally love frozen or freezedried bloodworms (mosquito larva). Some will also eat live shrimp or other crustaceans.
I have a sorority of 6 girls, and a divided 10 gallon with two males. They are fed a staple of New Life Spectrum Betta Formula, and I give them some Hikari pellets once a week (Hikari is a low grade food made of wheat and generic fish meal, I am only feeding it so I don't have to throw it away), and then a couple times a week they get freezedried bloodworms.
