What fish would be good to add to a 5-G tank with 1 male betta?

Tomorrow I'm going to buy a 5-G tank to upgrade from my previous 1-G. What fish would be good tankmates?

I would suggest putting at least two corys in there they are schooling fish that like to stay in groups. Many people suggest that they stay in a group of 4-6 (depending on who you ask) but I have had good luck with two of them in with one of my bettas! A lonely cory is a sad cory!

Good luck on your tank and i would suggest that you let your tank run a week before getting any fish for it!

Welcome to the forum.....a 5gal is not big enough to meet the needs of a proper school of fish along with the Betta...the smallest tank would be 10gal and then you are still limited with species and numbers of other fish along with the Betta.

Not even going into the water quality issue with overstocking and poor stocking-when you have limited space this can cause stress and this in turn can compromise the immune response of all species-it also allows the fish to corner each other causing damage and/or death...it may work for a short time-but long term you may end up with sick and/or dead fish

In a 5gal with a single Betta...shrimp and/or snails will work, however, this also depends on the Betta as well as cover-some Bettas will not tolerate any tank mates....

I agree with OFL, no tank mates for a betta in anything smaller than a 10 gallon. You could have shrimp or snails in a 5 gallon, but snails like to make a mess out of things and have a big bioload, and your betta might make a snack out of the shrimp.

I agree with the two above posters. 10g is needed for tankmates, a 5g simply does not meet their swimming needs and can't handle their bioload.

Definitely would not put more fish in with a betta in 5 gallons- way too small to hold the proper bio load. Some small shrimps or a snail would be fine- but not a fish, and especially not a schooling fish as schools tend to be 5+.

I'm probably just going to put a few Ghost Shrimp in there. They're cheap, so It won't matter if my Betta eats them :P
