Ripped Dorsal

I've have my betta since October and I think he's doing great. Well about a week ago I guess, I noticed a little hole in his dorsal fin. I didn't really think much of it until it seems to keep getting bigger each day until one day it ripped and his whole dorsal fin ripped in half! Sorry I don't have pics but it doesn't seem like a huge deal. He lives in a 2.65 gallon, heated, with water changes every 4 days. He is eating and acting totally normal. At the base of the rip, like on his back, there seems to be a bit of fuzzy stuff but I'm not sure if it is just fin regrowth? I'm not sure! What do you guys think? Do you think it's life threatening? I'm scared! There is nothing he could have caught it on, I'm pretty sure! Thanks!

hm. well a picture would definately help but if your betta has no tankmates that could have damaged his fin or any artificial plants or other decor that could have ripped his fin, then I would have to assume its fin rot. I don't think the white fuzz your seeing is fin regrowth because usually fin regrowth looks clear. When my betta was having fin problems, i added aquarium salt to his tank during water changes and did an extra 25% water change to his 10g tank every week and he made excellent progress; however, my betta's fin damage was from injury not fin rot.

Okay thanks. I have no idea what is going on! Half of this fin is just gone! Ugh! I am doing a water change today so I will add Aq salt.
