sudden aggression

hello, i have 2 bettas in a 5 gallon aquarium, and ever since i bought them, they have behaved well, and NEVER fought. however, i woke up this morning to find that one of the bettas had lost a large part of the dorsal fin and anal fin! i was shocked! at first i thought fin rot, or something with the tank, but i saw the 2 bettas begin to fight vicously. they are both female bettas. i have one isolated in a large breeder unit and the other in the tank, and have been rotating them. i know how aggressive bettas are, and know putting them into the same tank was probably not the brightest choice. the tank was only 30 dollars for hood filter and tank, so if i sell it, its no biggie. i have a spare 10 gallon that i could divide and get 2 cheap overhang filters that i could use for them, but that is something i dont necessairly want to do, i will if i have to. my lfs also sells 2.5 gallon kits that i coud get and put them each in one.

What do you think i sould do?

obviously dont do this or you will have 3 dead bettas

that is an equiveling of 5 gallons per betta...... if its divided. why not just buy another five?

if u have a ten spare whats the point of buying

and if u get more females that will spread out the argression

I say you split the 10g for them. 5g per betta is fine but 2.5g is to small IMHO. 5g is the absolute smallest I would keep a betta in.

I wouldn't add anymore because while it can soread out the agression, in such a small tank it would make it very difficult for the less dominant ones to get away so the chances are that there would still be injuries and perhaps deaths.

alright the five has been bought. i am taking down my existing 10 and putting all the fishies ionto the 20. i would like to take a vote, which betta gets to go into the new tank?
