What filter media should I use?

Apologies if this has been covered on this forum before, or is contained in a sticky somewhere and I've missed it, but I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with my filter.

I have a Hawkeye 5 gallon tank, which came with the Aquarius Mini Might filter.

The cartridge it came with and the replacement cartridges available (none for this filter specifically, but it uses the same size as the Whisper 3i) both contain activated carbon.

Of course I bought the cartridges before coming home and reading that I shouldn't use carbon with the live plants I intend to have.

What media can I put in this filter, instead of the cartridges?

Should I use something like...

...cut to the correct size?

A combination of some? Something else entirely?

If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
